Heaven's Best of Denver often gets asked how to vacuum and care for expensive area rugs, especially wool rugs. Under a microscope, a wool fiber looks like an unopened pine cone. In order to get soil that wedges in the crevices of the fiber, you must be thorough in your vacuuming. First give the top of the rug a thorough vacuuming. Then, flip the rug over and vacuum the back fo the rug. The beater bar from your vacuum will help vibrate out some of the trapped dirt, much like when people would hang their rugs outside and beat them many years ago. Finally, put the rug back right side up and revacuum the top again to get the soil you knocked loose out. Sometimes, you may have to also vacuum/sweep the floor underneath the rug in between steps as you will see some of the soil you have knocked out.
